Global Survey On Digital And Sustainable Trade 2023 By UN

As per the latest news, the fifth UN Global Survey on Digital and Sustainable Trade Facilitation 2023 has been introduced by the five United Nations Regional Commissions and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

This 2023 edition comprises 60 measures, including two new sets of measures on “Trade Facilitation for e-commerce” and “Wildlife Trade Facilitation”, on international e-commerce and the use of electronic CITES grants and certificates.

It keeps on including measures associated with the arrangements of the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement covering the agricultural area, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), women traders, and trade finance, as well as crisis measures during times of emergencies.

The preliminary consequences of the 2023 Survey will be released in July, followed by the final consequences as a Global Report and five Local reports.

The above-mentioned survey aims to deliver an overview of the development of the execution of measures on digital and sustainable trade facilitation and intuitive data to help nations in growing their national trade facilitation strategies, such as the National Trade Facilitation Roadmap of the Kyrgyz Republic 2021–2025.

The consequences of the UN Global Survey can likewise assist better with the accession process to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for UNECE member States, such as Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The previous survey highlighted that the execution rate of trade facilitation measures in 44 UNECE member States increased from 72% in 2019 to 76% in 2021. UNECE members States had witnessed higher execution rates, especially on “Transparency” and “Formalities”.

Trade facilitation plays a vital role in encouraging resilient, sustainable, and inclusive growth and a post-pandemic recovery.

The Covid-19 pandemic and geopolitical risks have worsened the vulnerabilities of global supply and value chains, realizing the importance of digital and sustainable trade facilitation during the crisis and the significance of improving readiness for future emergencies.

Timely & proper trade facilitation measures can support resolving the requirements of vulnerable groups, including micro, SMEs, and women-led enterprises.

The intricacy of the trade facilitation scenario, involving an extended range of stakeholders and leaders across nations and areas, also demands more noteworthy international cooperation and capacity building, especially for nations with economies in transition.

Meanwhile, rising advancements and digitization demonstrate opportunities for nations to develop resilience and boost their readiness, and provide tools to better help the execution of the trade facilitation measures, especially on digital and paperless trade in the area.

The Survey is an effort under the Joint UNRECs Approach to Trade Facilitation, settled upon by the Executive Secretaries of the five United Nations Regional Commissions.

As the global focal point for trade facilitation proposals and norms, UNECE builds tools that lessen, fit, and digitalized procedures in global trade.

The survey also likewise provides a chance to track the uptake and effects of such solutions for economic participation and integration, both in the area and globally.
